ABOUT THE PANEL DISCUSSION
Free registration required via Humanitix here
Join for a curated panel discussion at Eramboo Gallery as part of the exhibition ‘Kayfabe the Bastard’. The invited panel includes local councillors, ecologists, and the next generation of leaders, who will share their visions for the far future, specifically the years 2060-2079, as they reflect on data from tools such as Adapt NSW. Kayfabe, a term borrowed from the world of wrestling, is the willing suspension of disbelief in the moment, and this conversation will explore our relationship with the far future through this lens. This discussion is a crucial aspect of my reflections on climate change and a live score for the exhibition, providing insights into my artistic material practice.
The panel conversation is moderated by Greg Stonehouse, Eramboo’s founding director.
ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
In my current exhibition, ‘Kayfabe the Bastard,’ I use a variety of media to explore intimate and extended relationships, pushing the boundaries of technology and human interaction. I am deeply interested in the immersive and transformative power of “kayfabe” in performance and its intersection with advanced technology to shape narratives and audience experiences. “Kayfabe” represents the ‘willing suspension of disbelief for the moment,’ inviting both performers and audiences to collectively immerse themselves in believing it for the sake of enjoying its narrative. This concept holds the potential for participants to identify with fictional personas and adhere to established conventions. My project, “Kayfabe the bastard” is a merger of cutting-edge LiDAR spatial scan technology, Artificial Generative tools and traditional material practices, to create a fascinating exploration of how new authoritative technology can prefigure narratives.
Artist Notes on the Exhibition:
“Kayfabe the bastard” merges spatial scan technology, artificial generative tools and traditional material practices, to explore the distant future, climate change forecasts, and the frozen world of speech acts and relationships. Central to the work are the phrases “I promise” and “I forgive” that reflect tensions between promises made to future generations today the potential for those promises to go unfulIed because we are unable to “break character” in the present. I consider the uncertainty and ethical dilemmas involved in projecting the future and expecting forgiveness from future generations.
