A thought from our Curator, Dr Therese Kenyon:
How can we, on the fringes of cities, treasure our forests as keepers of
habitat for flora and fauna and solitude, for us humans? The romance of
forest mountainous landscapes and the sense of joy in isolation has
often been the subject of art and poetry.
Forging a path, off the beaten track is a metaphor for independent thinking and trust in the creative process.
The idea of ‘Into the Pathless Woods’ was to develop new work around the environmental, psychological
and political hopes that we as humans desire to leave for future generations.

The exhibiting artists have drawn inspiration from Lord Byron’s poem to posit different ways of exploring our current state and our future.
There is pleasure in the pathless woods,
There is rapture on the lonely shore,
There is society, where none intrudes,
By the deep sea, and music in its roar:
I love not man the less, but Nature more,
From these our interviews, in which I steal
From all I may be, or have been before,
To mingle with the universe, and feel
What I can ne’er express, yet cannot all conceal.
Lord Byron 1788-1824
