Body / Building’ is a movement workshop that considers the potential of the body as a moving sculpture. It involves a series of prompts to loosen up the body and respond to the space (the building). The prompts have been inspired by a Japanese movement practice known as ‘Butoh’ or ‘Bodyweather’, as well as experimental performance art scores such as Hans Ulrich Obrist’s ‘do it’, the ‘Fluxus Performance Work- book’, and Franz Erhard Walther’s relational artworks.

The group will begin with the Japanese cleansing practice of washing the floors with cloths and buckets of water, followed by an initial stretching of the body. Participants will then work individually and in groups, responding to the prompts to loosen their bodies. They will be encouraged to consider the frame of their body in relation to the frame of a building, and in particular the framework of the surrounding gallery space.

This will be followed by a series of smaller, quieter activities isolating certain parts of the body. These activities will focus and still the mind.

The workshop will end with a debrief and reflection session, including meditation, journalling and sharing.
